What’s the difference between platform ladders, step ladders, scaffold towers and podium steps?

If a safer alternative is available, then you are required to use it under the working height regulations to ensure you’re as safe as possible.

• Platform ladders: Ideal for medium-height tasks like painting, drilling and decorating where hands-free work is required. Best used for moderate length tasks.
• Step ladders: Best for low-height tasks like fixing lights and hanging paintings. Very easy to move into another position. Ideal for use when tasks are only a short duration.
• Scaffold towers: These are perfect for high tasks like exterior home work or decorating in double-height spaces. You can work hands free for long periods of time.
• Podium steps: Great for medium height jobs like decorating and interior work that requires greater stability as podium steps have high guardrails that meet strict safety requirements. You can complete moderate length tasks here extremely safely.

Do I need training to install podium steps?

No, you don’t. They’re fairly straightforward to put together, but there are options available for those nervous about erecting the larger platform yourself.

The PASMA training course, for example, can help those who are unfamiliar learn the proper techniques for assembling and de-assembling your podium steps. PASMA (or prefabricated access suppliers’ and manufacturers’ association) have put together a training course that can help users with preparing pre-assembled platforms in the safest way possible to protect themselves and other users.

What’s the safest way to use podium steps?

Unlike with ladders, three points of contact aren’t really required here because of the guardrails around the platform. However, as you climb into position you should maintain three points of contact until you’re at height and safe.

After that you are free to work hands-free in most cases, just make sure the podium steps aren’t overloaded and you aren’t overreaching to complete your tasks. Maintain proper balance at all times and ensure the podium steps are set up correctly for maximum protection.
